University of Freiburg and University of Strasbourg (Franco-German Programs)

Stand B19

You are a chemist, physicist, engineer or biologist and you are planning to embark on a career in Soft Matter Science? These two options might be the right choice for you:

1) Our International Master in Polymer Sciences (IM-PolyS) was initiated in October 2014. Built on a long-standing transnational collaboration in training and research, the University of Freiburg and the University of Strasbourg offer an International Master program in “Polymer Sciences” (IM-PolyS).
The IM-PolyS aims at providing a comprehensive and interdisciplinary training encompassing chemical, physical and biological aspects of polymer and soft matter sciences.
Contacts with industry and possibilities to specialize according to individual preferences will offer broad opportunities for your career in the industrial or academic world.

There is a possibility to go on with a PhD thesis, e.g. in the framework of the PhD program IRTG “Soft Matter Science”.

2) Our PhD program "International Research Training Group (IRTG) in Soft Matter Science: Concepts for the Design of Functional Materials” is an interdisciplinary research and training program between the universities of Strasbourg and Freiburg with colleagues from Basel and Mulhouse.

This IRTG brings together chemists, physicists, engineers and biologists from all over the world to advance the knowledge in the field of soft condensed matter and to develop concepts for the design of innovative materials with a high level of functionality.
All research projects are bilateral and, taking advantage of the geographic proximity between the universities of Freiburg, Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Basel, all PhD students enrolled in the IRTG Soft Matter Science have the opportunity to conduct their research project in France and Germany via short- and long term visits at the partner university.

What is the research project “Soft Matter Science: Concepts for the Design of Functional Materials”?
The research program in “Soft Matter Science: Concepts for the Design of Functional Materials” comprises 22 PhD theses organized in three focus areas:
A. Soft matter interfaces: From membranes to tribology
B. From design to multifunctional materials and devices
C. From physical concepts to material properties

Our multi-component and international qualification concept that aims at optimizing the career perspectives of the IRTG graduates, comprises four key elements:
SoMaS Summer Schools
Discussion Meetings
Internal Workshops
Training Camps

Moreover, dedicated seminars and contributions by international visitors, as well as an extensive exchange program and an elaborate supervisory concept, establish a platform for the training of soft matter scientists who will be highly qualified for the international job market.
